Consultant Information to Patients about Medical Insurance
- FSA Rules and FIPO Guidelines, November 2009

It is inevitable that consultants will be asked questions by their patients about the provisions, exclusions and background to their private medical insurance. Consultants will also on occasions be required to fill in insurance forms or answer queries from insurers.

Some insurers have objected to what they take as being adverse comments or recommendations by consultants. Some consultants have been threatened with de-recognition by insurers.

FIPO has sought guidance from the FSA and this has led to a set of guidelines which should assist consultants and reassure both patients and insurers. These are based on the Financial Services and Markets Act.
